The start of the season for Tottenham Hotspurs has been a difficult one as the squad of Mauricio Pochettino has had to face off against some of the top clubs in the Premier League during the initial 3 months of the season.

Arsenal, Liverpool, Southampton, Manchester City are some of the top clubs that Tottenham Hotspurs has had to face so far in this season with a number of draws and defeats having been experienced along the way.

Tottenham Hotspur is currently located in the mid-section of the English standings and despite not being in the top spots of the Premier League, Mauricio Pochettino is optimistic about the future of his squad as he stated that his players are performing better as each match passes on.

“I have enjoyed my four months at Tottenham. We knew when we signed for Tottenham that we expected a tough period. We are in a very tough period in the club, but when you arrive to a club with big potential like Tottenham, a big club, and have the possibility to build something important, this is a very good challenge for us’’ Pochettino told the media.

Mauricio Pochettino signed a 5 year long deal with Tottenham Hotspur as he made his way from an outstanding time in charge of Southampton which attracted the attention of Tottenham and they were willing to sign him on such a long period of time but despite having signed for the upcoming 5 years, if Pochettino is not able to finish the current season in a top position in the Premier League then his managerial position at White Hart Lane could be in risk.

Tottenham suffered yet another thrashing at the hands of Liverpool at White Hart Lane after a 3-0 defeat during the weekend. Last season, Brendan Rodgers’ team ran out 5-0 winners in a performance that was inspired by Luis Suarez. A lot of changes to the teams have taken place since then with Tottenham bringing in former Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino to take the team back to the Champions League. Liverpool, meanwhile, lost their star asset in the former Suarez to Barcelona over the summer. Despite this, Tottenham looked far away from Liverpool throughout the 90 minutes.

After the match, Pochettino gave his damning verdict that Tottenham have to improve a lot in order to compete for a top four place. The North London team came into the encounter after having won the opening two matches, but this defeat is a major setback especially given that it occurs just before the international break. Most of the Tottenham players, who will not be involved in internationals over the next fortnight, will be reflecting on this defeat for a long period. Pochettino spoke about the importance of recovering from this defeat as soon as possible.

Tottenham have a tough round of fixtures coming up with matches in the Europa League followed by opponents like Arsenal and Manchester City in the league.

“Today was a very tough day for us. I think the key to our defeat was the start of the second half when there was a soft penalty. We played OK but were unlucky in the key moments. It was a very soft penalty but we need to improve. We need to build our confidence and build our future. We have a lot of games ahead. Sometimes you improve from your victories but you need to improve too from your defeats,” said Pochettino.

Tottenham is in an uncomfortable situation of late- it’s their player Vertonghen who has raised serious controversies for his bad play-acting at the club’s last match against Dnipro.

It seems that the Belgian footballer managed to mug up everything what is wrong with the game in a single moment of perfectly pure ridiculousness. The player has drawn severe criticisms from many quarters since then.

Last Friday. Tottenham Hotspur was having a match against Dnipro, the leading Ukranian club, in the 2nd half of the Europa League championship tie.

The Brit club lost out on the 1st leg 1-0 & when their Ukrainian opponent opened scoring in 2nd leg, Spurs were very much on the verge of losing the game.

But everything changed completely with the turn 62nd minute of the match. Jan walked into Roman Zozulya (Dnipro) & then suddenly crashed to ground, theatrically clutching the face.

It was certainly a very implausible, stupid dive from the Belgian. The 2 players had hardly touched ne another. However, Antony Gautier, the referee was befooled completely & he showed the red card to Zozulya.

That was something really unethical to the Ukrainian side as whatever the Tottenham player did was completely his own antics and there was hardly any trace of contribution from Zozulya. As a result, Dnipro were wrongfully reduced to 10 men which enabled Vertonghen’s club to go on with the winning title. They won the match with 3-1 status, progressing to next round.

The Belgian was not exactly repentant for his wrongful antics post the match. “I walked towards him. I walked up to him again & he gave me one”, said the Belgian stressing that it was the Dnipro player who made him crash to ground. “He gave me the reason to crash. It is his fault & not mine.”

Tottenham’s manager Tim Sherwood has said that the club needs to finish in the top four this season or he will face the wrath of chairman Daniel Levy, who is known as one of the hardest negotiators in football. The club invested in excess of £ 100 million on several new players in the summer. However, manager Andre Villas-Boas did not even see Christmas with his new team after he was sacked following a run of poor results. The club has made it a priority to finish in the top four, which will provide them with Champions League football next season.

Tottenham have been involved in the Champions League only once in their history. Due to the absence of this prestigious tournament, they are unable to keep their stars for much longer. The departure of Gareth Bale is believed to have been the cause of this factor. The Welshman was sold to Manchester United for £86 million. Spurs reinvested the whole amount along with money of their own in order to bring in players like Roberto Soldado and Paulinho.

However, the club never got going Andre Villas-Boas this season after only managed to miss out on the top four last season. Bale was an influential figure, but Villas-Boas have to change the entire formation due to his departure.

“It’s been good. We know there are going to be tougher tests ahead, but it’s been a good start for me. If the season were to end tomorrow I don’t think the chairman would be too happy because we are fifth. The final league position has to meet the expectation of the club otherwise it’s ‘goodbye Charlie’. The club needs to finish in fourth place, we want to finish in fourth place,” said Sherwood, who has five wins in his six matches as the Tottenham manager.

Andre Villas-Boas is in danger of being sacked after the huge defeat that the Spurs suffered in their previous League game against Manchester City. City won that game by 6-0.

Yes, it was an away game for the Spurs, but, nobody had expected them to be thrashed in that manner. It would have been quite embarrassing for their fans.

Villa-Boas had spent a lot of bucks during the pre-season transfer window to strengthen his squad, but, his new signings have not managed to do anything significant so far in the ongoing season and according to the reports, the Tottenham board is running out of patience now.

After suffering that humiliating defeat against City, the Spurs have now drifted down to no. 9 in the league points table. That was their 4th defeat in the ongoing league. Now, there is a gap of 8 points between them and the table toppers Arsenal.

Tottenham’s performance has deteriorated quite a lot this month. In their last 3 League games, they haven’t found the back of the net even a single time.

In the press conference after that match against City, Villas-Boas had no hesitation in admitting that the performance level of his team in the game was extremely poor.

The Tottenham boss said, “It’s really an embarrassing situation for all of us. We did not get a single thing right. To have 6 goals scored against you with such a defence, it’s a shame.”

“We got trailed pretty early in the game and we fell apart after that. Now, all we can do is to ensure that we come back fighting next game.”

Tottenham’s next game is a Europa League encounter against Tromso IL. That game will be played at Alfheim Stadion on Thursday.

Even though he has not been selected for the Premier league matches as starter, England international Jermain Defoe has been a revelation for Tottenham this season. He is the top scorer at the club right now after scoring numerous goals in the Europa league. He continued the rich vein of form in the 2-0 win over Anzhi Makhachkala on Thursday night. After the match, manager Andre Villas-Boas agreed that the form of Defoe is giving him a lot of selection problems. This is especially true because Roberto Soldado has not been doing well in recent matches.

Even though he conceded this aspect, Villas-Boas hinted that he may have to stick with Soldado for the upcoming Premier league match because of who has played 90 minutes of football only on Thursday night. Recovery time is also very crucial in order to have the team performing in the best possible manner. Defoe is also very close to beating the record held by Martin Chivers for the most number of goals at Tottenham. Villas-Boas said that this would be a great achievement and it shows the quality of the player.

Defoe can be expected to be called to the Premier league starting lineup sooner rather than later. Soldado has not found the back of the net in recent matches.

“We have to judge recovery and the fact that JD was involved today and Soldado wasn’t. Everything will come into consideration. We have been extremely happy with the performances of both. It is a question of deciding what is best for the team. It was another great goal, a great finish. It’s really good to see him out there again doing extremely well whenever he’s given the opportunity. He is a great professional, has a great attitude,” said Villas-Boas after the Anzhi Makhachkala match.

Tottenham have been one of the Premier league outfits currently in Asia as part of their pre-season preparations. They have been involved in a number of friendlies against South Asian teams. They recently managed a 6-0 demolition of South China. After the match, striker Jermain Defoe said that it was a good outing for the team because it helps them gain a lot of confidence when it comes to attacking ahead of the start of the Premier league season. Defoe is one of the main strikers in the Tottenham squad. Even the anticipated arrival of Roberto Soldado is unlikely to change his importance within the team.

His form has been one of the main reasons for Tottenham finishing in the top five positions over the last few seasons. He has been able to consistently dislodged Emmanuel Adebayor from the starting line-up. The England international scored a hat-trick in the match against South China. He scored 11 goals from 34 league matches last season. Thus, he became only the second best player within the Tottenham squad after Gareth Bale. Defoe has said that he has seen on several occasions that a good goalscoring form in the pre-season is often carried into the season itself.

Hence, he is confident that the club will be able to make a good start.

“In my experience, over the years, when you’re scoring goals they just keep coming, and when you’ve had a good pre-season, you’re scoring goals that lead you into the start of the season. I want to get off to a good start and it’s important in pre-season games that not only me but all the lads feel fit and sharp. It’s important to have that confidence going into the games, you believe that you’re going to score and when you’ve got that belief, good things happen,” said Defoe.

The manager of Tottenham Hotspur, Andre Villas-Boas, has assured the fans that his team can still qualify for the Champions League.

Tottenham slipped to the 5th position in the Premier League points table after playing a draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Thursday. Now, they have to play only a couple of games and they need to play remarkably well in those games to displace Arsenal from that 4th position. The Gunners are currently one point ahead of Tottenham.

In the match against Chelsea, Tottenham got trailed twice, but, on both the occasions, they managed to equalize.

The goal scorers for Tottenham in that match were Emmanuel Adebayor and Gylfi Sigurdsson, while, for the Blues, the two players who found the net were Oscar and Ramires.

Talking to the reporters after the match against Chelsea, Villas-Boas said, “We had gone into this match with the target of getting three points, but, unfortunately, we couldn’t get that. But, this is not the end of the competition. There are two more games to go and we can still bounce back.”

“Nothing can be predicted in this competition. In the final few games, dramatic things can happen. We still have a very good chance to make it to the Champions League. All we need to do is to keep believing in ourselves.”

“We haven’t played badly in the league so far. The boys have shown great intensity in every match and I am proud of the team.  I don’t think we have let the supporters down in too many matches.”

“The last two games are against Stoke City and Sunderland and we can’t afford to lose points in those matches. We will have to get 6 points at any cost.”

The Spurs will take on Stoke City on 12th of May at Britannia Stadium.

Tottenham are looking to seal their third top four finish in four seasons, as they compete with the likes of Chelsea, Everton, and Arsenal. The manager Andre Villas-Boas has managed steady the ship after an indifferent start to his managerial reign at White Hart Lane. The club are just one point behind the European champions Chelsea in the table, while they hold a comfortable four point advantage over archrivals Arsenal. Despite this, Arsenal had been considered as the favourites to finish in the top four by the end of the season. Villas-Boas has said that it is extremely crucial that the Tottenham players regard each and every point to be important.

Tottenham will be taking on Newcastle during the weekend. They will have the opportunity to go into the third position with a victory over Alan Pardew’s men. There are 14 games left in the Premier league season. Tottenham were in a similar position last season as well, but an incredible collapse in the final few months of the campaign meant that they could only finish in the fourth position. This ultimately led to the losing the opportunity to play the Champions League as Chelsea managed to win this competition leaving only one berth available for English clubs.

“Ideally, this is a game where we can continue our objectives. A win moves us into third place and we can then wait for the results. That’s our focus for the weekend. Now, every game is important. There are lots of games still to be played, but every single point can make a difference,” said Villas-Boas. His former club Chelsea, meanwhile, will be hosting Wigan on Saturday. The form of the European champions has been extremely well over the last couple of weeks. Any dropped points from this encounter is likely to result in Tottenham leapfrogging them.
